Understanding Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, begins when healthy cells in one or both kidneys grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. It often starts in the tiny tubes of the kidney (renal tubules) and can spread to nearby organs or tissues if not treated early.
At BIACH&RI, we are committed to early detection, advanced treatments, and holistic care for patients battling kidney cancer.
Types of Kidney Cancer
The most common types include:
1. Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC)
- Accounts for about 90% of kidney cancers
- Starts in the lining of the small tubes in the kidney
2. Transitional Cell Carcinoma
- Begins in the ureters or renal pelvis (where urine collects before moving to the bladder)
3. Wilms Tumor
- A rare kidney cancer mostly found in children
4. Renal Sarcoma
- Rare form that starts in blood vessels or connective tissue of the kidney
Risk Factors and Causes
While the exact cause of kidney cancer is not always clear, the following factors may increase your risk:
- Smoking
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- Family history of kidney cancer
- Long-term dialysis treatment
- Certain genetic conditions (e.g., von Hippel-Lindau disease)
Symptoms of Kidney Cancer
Early-stage kidney cancer often presents no symptoms. However, as the tumor grows, signs may include:
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Persistent lower back pain or side pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Lump or mass in the kidney area
- Fever not caused by infection
📌 Note: These symptoms can also indicate other health issues. Timely evaluation is crucial.
How is Kidney Cancer Diagnosed?
At BIACH&RI, we use advanced diagnostic methods to ensure accurate and early detection:
- Urine Tests: To check for blood or cancer cells
- Blood Tests: To assess kidney function and related markers
- Ultrasound: A non-invasive imaging test to detect kidney masses
- CT Scan/MRI: Detailed imaging to identify tumor size, location, and spread
- Biopsy: A sample of kidney tissue may be taken for lab analysis (in selected cases)
