Blood Bank at BIACH & RI is well-equipped with adequate infrastructure and trained manpower for quality, safety and efficacy of blood and blood products.
The hospital blood centre is responsible for the collection of blood (often from family/ replacement blood donors) testing for transfusion transmissible infection.. It also performs compatibility testing and issues blood and blood components for clinical use within the hospital or to nearby health care facilities.

Transfusion Medicine
Blood transfusion is an essential therapeutic intervention and is a vital part of the health care service. We all may need blood in an emergency and some of us need regular transfusions. The purpose of a transfusion is to provide the blood & blood components that will improve the physiological status of the patient. Increasing demand in the field of transfusion medicine has necessitated enforcing measures to ensure quality of Blood and its products.
Apheresis
Apheresis is a procedure carried out to harvest a particular component and returning the rest of the blood to the donor by an automated machine. Five apheresis units are functioning in our blood bank. This procedure should be carried out only in a blood bank licensed for this purpose. Facilities available for Platelet pheresis (single donor platelets) and Leukopheresis from whole blood using continuous and intermittent flow cell separators.
Therapeutic cytopheresis is done only at the written request of the patient´s physician with in the blood bank or preferably in the ward depending on the patient´s clinical condition for Autologous and Allogenic Hematopoietic stem cell harvesting and cryopreservation.
Blood Irradiator – Blood irradiation is advised –
· Cellular components should be irradiated in order to reduce the risk of post transfusion GVHD
· For all immune suppressed patients including bone marrow transplant patients
· When blood is received from a blood related donor.
· In case neonatal exchange transfusion

DIETETICS
The Dietetics department of BIACH&RI is committed to provide the best services to the in-patients diet. Having a team of six Dieticians, an array of patient care services are provided which include, nutrition assessment for inpatients, diet counseling, feeding recommendations, outpatient diet counseling etc.,Different types of diets are prescribed and served to patients in the hospital according to the doctors advise.
To ensure safe and quality food service, food samples are sent for microbiological tests.
Activities of Dietetics Department:
Regular patient nutrition education and awareness programs are done where patients and attendants are gathered and are educated through audio-visual aids.
National Nutrition Week is celebrated every year where different activities like exhibitions, nutrition games, displaying of healthy foods and menu etc, are organized.
Dieticians are encouraged to attend various Nutrition update sessions and conferences organized by different associations, certificate training courses, etc.
Dietetics department also organizes regular Nutrition Education programs for hospital staff.

We have 24×7 F & B service for the patients under the guidance of our senior dieticians the diet for the patient is prepared. We also provide continental food for patient attendants at cost
Dormitory
Dormitory is meant for the poorest of the poor who is charged at the Rs 12/- per day and several philanthropic organizations provide food free of cost to patients and their attendants.

SOCIAL WORK DEPARTMENT (SWD)
The Department of Social Work has clinical social workers to help patients, their families and friends cope with their cancer. SWD also assist them in dealing with psychological or social barriers to their treatment. Medico social worker assess the psychosocial functioning of patient and family member and intervenes as necessary, intervention include supportive counseling, grief counseling and family counseling.
COUNSELLING:
A cancer diagnosis can mean increased distress for patients and their families. Highly skilled and professionally trained, Social workers provide short-term and long term counseling free of charge. By counseling and adopting various approaches a confidence level is built up in the patient and their family members to cope up with the diagnosis and treatment.
