Uro Oncology
Neuro-Oncology is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors affecting the brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system. These tumors can be primary, originating in the nervous system, or secondary, spreading from cancers elsewhere in the body.
Neuro-Oncology specialists treat a wide range of conditions, including gliomas, glioblastomas, meningiomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas, pituitary tumors, and metastatic brain tumors. Tumors of the spinal cord and nerve sheath are also part of this specialty.
Symptoms vary depending on the tumor’s location and size but can include persistent headaches, seizures, changes in vision, difficulty in speech, weakness or numbness in limbs, memory loss, balance issues, and personality changes. Spinal tumors may cause back pain, walking difficulty, or bladder and bowel dysfunction.
Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like MRI and CT scans, along with neurological evaluations. In some cases, a biopsy is required to determine the type and grade of the tumor. Advanced diagnostics may include PET-CT and molecular or genetic testing to better understand the tumor’s behavior.
Treatment depends on the tumor type, location, and patient condition. Options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. In many cases, a combination of treatments is used. Multidisciplinary tumor boards help decide the best course of action tailored to each patient.
