1.CARDIOLOGY

Cardiac evaluation and fitness are necessary for cancer patients posted for surgery. Breast cancer survivors are at risk for cardiotoxicity. Pediatric cancer survivors are two to five times more likely than the general population to develop heart disease. Proper cardiac evaluation influences the longevity and quality of life of patients in active treatment as well as cancer survivors.

2.GASTROENTEROLOGY

Gastroenterologists provide high-quality cancer care for a variety of cancers of the GI tract, including pancreatic cancer, liver and biliary tract cancer, colorectal cancer, anal cancer, small bowel cancer and stomach cancer etc..

7.PSYCHIATRY

The diagnosis of cancer can have devastating consequences on the patient and his/her caregivers. A lot of questions remain unanswered, a few feared and not spoken of. In the midst of this, there is an extreme hurry with doing extensive investigations, meeting doctors and starting treatment. And when the smoke clears, one realizes what the diagnosis of cancer brings and how “life would never be the same”. In the past couple of decades, there have been tremendous improvements in the management of cancer and in general, the outlook of various cancers is far better than what it used to be in yesteryears. Yet, for the sufferer things might not appear very bright. Research in India and abroad suggests that about 60% of sufferers are initially depressed or anxious after a diagnosis is made. Studies also show that patients who are treated have better outcomes than those who continue to suffer from these and other mental health issues.

Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy can have their own adverse consequences like nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, decreased energy levels, and pain. As does extensive surgery-body disfigurement, physical handicap. The good news is that nobody needs to suffer; the pain and discomfort (physical or emotional) can be mitigated with appropriate medication, therapy and relaxation. At BIACH & RI we believe in holistic care and understand that our patients, in addition to needs specific to their illness, also need care and psychological support during this difficult period in their lives. The Department of Psychiatric Oncology has been started with these initiatives in mind. Dr. Aftab Ali Khan who has extensive experience in this particular field of Medicine/Psychiatry heads the department.

Services of the Department

The following services currently fall in the purview of the department:

  • Assessment and treatment of clients with cancer and mental health issues identified either by their caregivers or primary doctors. Management is with medication and/or counseling as needed.
  • Support and psychoeducation to caregivers of patients. (as they too go through a lot of stress and are usually the unsung heroes in this.)
  • For patients who might have adverse effects from Chemo, Radio, and other interventions, we provide support in addition to pharmacological interventions. This is to ensure adherence to treatment and facilitate recovery. This would be in liaison with the treating doctor(s) and might also include allied departments like Social Work and Physiotherapy.

8.NEPHROLOGY

Uro-Oncology is quickly becoming a specialized aspect of nephrology. Patients with cancer are a group at risk for kidney injury due to exposure to chemotherapeutic drugs and the potential risks associated with bone marrow transplantation. The nephrologists along with oncologists and intensive care doctors deal with nephrotoxic effects of commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, acute kidney injury syndromes in cancer patients, and kidney-related issues in recipients of bone marrow transplantation.

9.OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY (ENT)

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) handles various ear-nose-throat and neck cancer disorders efficiently and precisely in a multi-disciplinary approach.

10.DENTISTRY

Dentistry cares for children, adolescents, teens and people who suffer from dental cancer and treat patients with a broad range of conditions.
